Go for the shop, skip the tour The silk shop is the reason to go here. There are many interesting clothes, accessories and decor items. The prices were reasonable considering the high quality.
If you have time to do the... Tranquil Mystery Amongst the rush and roar of the traffic of Bangkok Jim Thompsons home provides something of a 'Wat' ( temple) like experience. Myself and my daughter jumped off the sky train and saw signs... Worth a visit  You'll get an excellent feel for Thai architecture and design in this well preserved home. It's walking distance from downtown.
