If you're flying into Gatwick, you can get a direct train from gatwick airport to brighton. Costs about £8 one way.

Train - from London Victoria you can get a South Train direct to Brighton. It will stop at Clapham Jc, East Croydon, Redhill, Gatwick, Crawley, Horsham and a couple of other little stations in between but it will only take about an hour and a half.
