as was said, what type of boat?it ( without going to a Great Circle calculator web site) is about 8,000 nautical miles via Panama from Oslo to Honolulu.......so how fast does the boat go? a 40 foot sailing yacht at 5 knots?a freighter at 18?a nuclear carrier going all out at 35?

Going with an average of 12 kt on a 11,530 mile-trip from Bergen through the Panama Canal to Honolulu would take you about 35 days without stopping. Since you do have to stop, at least at the Panama Canal, you'll look at at least 5 weeks.You could save 4,500 miles if you were able to head for Hawaii through the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Strait. That's why many explorers tried to find that so-called "Northwest-Passage", in attempts to circumnavigate northern Canada and Alaska.
