Question : How much money should we take to Playa del Carmen on vacation?
Hi, we are traveling to Playa del Carmen, Mexico in August for our 10 year wedding anniversary. We have the hotel (all inclusive), airfare and airport transportation already covered. This is a splurge for us and I am a frugal person by nature. How much money should we expect to need while we are there? I know that our food and such are all covered at the hotel but I also know that we will probably go out for the nightlife and will need to tip and such. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Playa Del Carmen is a great vacation spot, and can be so much fun. Right there in town is Senior Frogs - a super fun place, especially when the cruise ships dock! I will warn you though, drinks are expensive and so is the souvenirs. Everything in town such as the shopping ranges from a good bargain to a rip off. Make sure you carry small amounts of cash in every pocket, only let them think you have small amounts...If you are going to look into excursions, I would recommend going a little further south to Xel Ha, which is an amazing natural water park. Filled with dolphin swimming, snorkeling, tubing, and great drinks. Another excursion is a four wheeler ride through the jungle that you can find info on at any tourist location. If you have time to take a tour of the Mayan ruins - do it. Tulum is amazing and you get to swim in the Caribbean! Another warning, the excursions can run anywhere from $80+ a person. They are so worth it though.10 years - my hat is off to you. Make sure you make a really memorable trip!!!

I would bring your dollars for tips and maybe another couple of hundred dollars for some nightlife. Bring your ATM card and if you need money go get it. Just remember the ATM will give you pesos not dollars. Bring credit card for any excursions.Congratulations on you 10th.Enjoy and have a great time.

Depends on what you would like to do ... most excursions can be booked at the all-inclusive resort and put on a major credit card. Just remember they will charge you in pesos so don't panic when you see all those numbers! We were there in June 2005 and a must is a day trip to Xel-Ha. Best place to snorkel and you can purchase SNUBA and/or Dolphin Discovery in addition. They DVD the Dolphin Discovery so you'll need about $20 USD if you'd like that. Otherwise one fee will cover all day at the park, transfers to and from; food and drinks are included with certain packages.Just have some cash (preferably US dollars) to tip your drivers.Have a great time!!! One of the best places in the world to go for a romantic vacation.

There is so much to see and do on any vacation, I would bring your Visa, or ATM and have a personal budget, but have back up just in case....There is an art to buying things in Mexico. Except places like pharmacies and convenience stores almost everything that is sold in a store is open to price negotiation. The trick is knowing what ever you wish to buy can most assuredly be found at a number of other stores, except some items like jewelry. So what you do while shopping, when you see something pricey you wish to buy, tell the store clerk you are definitely going to make the purchase and what is the lowest price they will give you. Write down the price. This is your starting off point. Now as you walk around you can check this price against other vender's prices for the same item when you see it. Once you have found the cheapest price for the item you wish to buy, first make an offer. Make this offer less than the cheapest price you were quoted and start haggling there. Quite often you will find yourself paying half of the first price quoted to you, if you use this system. Then there are the tours / activities, which may not interest you....Aquatic Expedition Riviera Maya $85 ATV & Speedboat Maroma Riviera Maya $58 ATV Rancho Loma Bonita Riviera Maya $48 Bullfights & Mexican Traditions Cancun $38 Captain Hook Cancun $68 Caribbean Carnaval Cancun $68 Caribbean Funday Isla Mujeres $57 Certified Diving with "Marina Punta del Este" Cancun $72 Chichen Itza Merida & Yucatan $61 Coba - Mayan Encounter Riviera Maya $112 Contoy Island "Asterix Tours" Cancun $70 Contoy Island "Kolumbus Tours" Cancun $70 Cozumel Certified Scuba Diving Cozumel $127 Cozumel Reef Snorkel Cozumel $105 Cozumel Snorkel "AquaWorld" Cozumel $87 Deep Sea Fishing Cancun $99 Dolphin Interactive Program "Atlantida" Cancun $70 Dolphin Swim "Atlantida" Cancun $135 Dolphin Swim "Xel-Ha" Riviera Maya $164 Dolphin Swim La Isla Cancun $135 Dolphin Swim Xcaret - Delphinus Riviera Maya $151 Dolphin Trainer for a Day "Atlantida" Cancun $170 Golf Club Cancun at Pok Ta Pok Cancun $90 Golf Club Cozumel Country Club Cozumel $96 Golf Club El Camaleon Mayakoba Riviera Maya $149 Golf Club Grupo Mayan Riviera Maya Riviera Maya $69 Golf Club Hilton Cancun Cancun $149 Golf Club Iberostar Playa Paraiso Riviera Maya $125 Golf Club Moon Palace Cancun $165 Golf Club Playacar Playa del Carmen $117 Horse Back Riding "Loma Bonita Ranch" Riviera Maya $61 Jeep Safari with Snorkel "Cozumel Highlights" Cozumel $100 Jungle Tour "Sunrise Marina" Cancun $55 Learn Scuba Diving with "AquaWorld" Cancun $132 Learn Scuba Diving with "Marina Punta del Este" Cancun $88 Night Fishing Cancun $60 Nohoch Jungle Crossing Riviera Maya $112 PADI Open Water Certification "AquaWorld" Cancun $462 Party Hopper Tour Cancun $65 Sealion Splash Adventure "Atlantida" Cancun $70 Shotover Jet Ride Cancun $45 Snorkeling Adventure Riviera Maya $76 Subsee Paradise Cancun $44 Tulum & Xel-Ha Riviera Maya $89 Tulum Caribbean Wonders Riviera Maya $69 Wet'n Wild Cancun $35 Xcaret Riviera Maya $59 Xel-Ha Riviera Maya $39 * Rates per person. Make sure that you have dollar bills for tipping. I would take about $500. I have been to that area a few times. The only extra's are some of the activities. Gifts, going into town and dining out ect. I hope that your hotel is as great as mine was! I was a travel agent so I'm pretty familiar!
