Try authentic polish food like pierogi, bigos, golabki, and my favourite is zapiekanka (it's a long thin bread topped with stir fried mushroom and onion and some cheese and ketchup on top).I don't know about accomodation, but depending on how long you stay for renting may be a good idea, or a hostel as the other option.Public transportation is the cheapest but may be a little confusing and street cars don't go in straight directions but usually to a specific part of the city via a confusing twisty and turny route. Trains are considered unsafe, however I have travelled by train several times and never had any issues. Just don't flaunt money and watches etc.Krakow is the most beautiful city in Poland. There is also Wieliczka which has beautiful underground rooms made of salt. It's a must see and words can't describe it.

I would suggest going to the mountain city of Zakopane. We stayed at the Sabala hotel. It was a "wooden" hotel from the outside, but was modernized inside. It even had a sauna and pool. The best part is that it's located on the main strip and you just have to step outside the hotel to be in the middle of all the street vendors, restaurants, street performers, etc.
