In Krakow, old town is pretty. Wawel Castle, Rynek Glowny, the cathedral, the Solidarity church, Jagiellonian University and the Copernicus room, Cafe Hawelka, Cafe Mikailjaska...Auschwitz is nearby and is also somewhere you should visit. The old town in Warsaw has been rebuilt and it really nice. I know less about Warsaw since I was only there a few days. Not sure about English medical books since they're more likely to be in Polish. I'd try buying them on-line from US or UK.
