Question : New York Travel questions?
I am flying into LaGuardia at about 7 pm, what is the best way to get to Manhattan? I am a cheapskate, but also reaonsable enough not to want to wait 3 hours to get there. How safe is the Upper west side?Where can I buy fake movies, watches, etc...?I want to eat for cheap, but don't think I can live on Mcdonalds for a week, how can I eat better at a reasonable cost?Seriously, how bad are the lines at the Statue of Libery and Empire State building.I am going alone, I am a 6'0 210 lb. male, should I be overly concerned with being mugged, etc....?(More detailed responces will get the best answer)

All Answers: Answer #1 1. you could take a bus/subway from La Guardia to the Port Authority bus terminal, but I wouldn't recommend it. Either take an express bus, or get a cab (there should be a ground transportation counter at the airport terminal)2.not sure about the upper west side3. Chinatown is the place to go for fake stuff (Canal Street)4. Toby's steakhouse on broadway (i think its at Broadway and 46th or 47th). You can get a steak lunch there for $55. This time of year, the lines probably aren't too bad6. Try not to look like a tourist (ie. looking up at the tall buildings, staring at the crazy people etc), and you should be ok - answered by Deasel98
Answer #2 Don't know about the cheapest way inot the city (bus/ train I'd think) but the upper west side was fine when I was there in March. Canal Street in China Town is where to go for fakes. Don't be put off by the crap they ahve on the stalls, just keep asking for the good stuff and you'll get it eventually. My friend always takes a picture of what she wants when she goes. You can get food anywhere, loads of fast food places and buffet bars in grocery stores. The lines at empire state can be awful, go to their website and book tickets in advance to skip them. again, you're normally looking at about an hour wait for the Liberty Island Ferry which is unavoidable.I've never worried about being mugged and infact feel safer when walking arounf nyc than I do in LOndon or Glasgow....its the same as everycity. If you don't attract attention, chances are you won't get it. - answered by truesdale s
Answer #3 From laguardia cheapest way is to take the bus to the train into manhattan....if you want to carry your luggage and go into harlem because it's the m 60 bus to the train at 125th street in harlem.I think yellow taxis cost 30 dollars flat rate into manhattan. I believe........so. Don't know about the other taxis it might depend you would have to ask them and try to haggle with them and say well i go to manhattan for no less than 25 or how ever much they charge bargin them down. The upper west side is pretty safe........depends on how far in manhattan ur going ....you will end up in harlem.Best place to find cheap stuff is definately canal street and around the 34th street -28th street area they have places that sell cheap perfurme, electronics, etc......If you want some place cheap to eat......best places for cheap food are in the village and you can find deals if you look aroundyou can try www.citysearch.com or www.eats.com. My favorite place for cheap eats that gives a lot of food for less than 10 dollars is jackson hole......i can never finish my food.....i lived off of them in college. The lines at empire state building are bad depending on what time of day and how the weather is....i kid you not my friend used to work there and people would have to wait for hours. Statue of liberty im not sure......If you going alone........don't look a tourist......do not stand out and look at the lights in awe because then people with know you are a tourist. And no you should not be overly concerned with being mugged if you do not look a tourist .......no one will mess with you. And as always depending on on where you go watch your money.......and watch your back you will be fine. Have fun.....welcome to nyc. - answered by lelani
Answer #4 There's a bus (M60) that goes to the upper east/west side (125th st) from La guardia. it's $2 dollars, it should take about 45 min, I'm not sure what the policy is on forms of payment. Some buses only take coins, some only metrocards. I haven't figured it out yet. There's also the airport express ($12?) that will take about 50min to get o Grand centralDepeding where you the upper west side is OK during the day. At night just stay close to broadway where there's a lot of activiy. If you have to go into "quieter" neighboorhoods after midnight, consider cab.Bootleg items check chinatown.Around columbia is cheaper, pretty good food. You can go to menupages.com and search good resturants in the areas you'll be in by price. just pice the one with one $. A lot of deli's are listed, but there are some sit-down places. Because that the so call "cheap" palces aren't for a tapas dish. Chinatown is cheap for food too.Statue of liberty lines are like 1 hour. It's not that unsafe. Just be smart about where you put your money. - answered by cyshas
