I went on a student budget. First, I am assuming you graduate in the summer. The summer is the worst time to go, because that is when everyone is traveling for vacation in Europe and it is expensive. You will find a cheaper ticket when it is cool - the winter.Second, if you could stay three weeks in one place, it may be cheaper and safer for the four of you to try to rent an apartment for a month. My brother and I got one about a 10 minute tram ride from all the sites in Prague for $400. Think.... if you spend $30 a night on a hostel for three people. You spend $90 for some place you can't lock up your stuff. One week is $270. Two weeks is $540? and Three is $810. If you stay for two - it may be hard to find a place that cheap for one month. If you stay for $810, then I think you could do it. Another thing to look into during the summer and winter - call up Universities and see if you guys can rent an empty room in a dorm. Think about staying in a smaller town too. It may be about half as much. Third - food. Don't plan on eating out at restaurants or going out much. If you have an apartment for a month (even though you don't use it for the whole time) you can cook at home. You can save a lot of money. I found in Prague a couple of cheap places where I can get a sandwich for a buck and now I am their best customer. Lonely Planet sucks some times. Lonely Planet was originally created with the back packer in mind. When I went to a smaller city in Russia, it was a GREAT resource. Lonely Planet Prague sucks. Currently the exchange rate is 20 kcz to the $1.00. Lonely Planet Prague has expensive internet cafes in it. It has expensive hostels, and expensive food. It gives you places that cost 400kcz to 500kcz which is $20 to $25. I budgeted about $13 a day for food, and I have enough money to have a few drinks at the club on the weekend. SEEING THE SITES WILL BREAK YOU BANK!!! It is sad but true. This is what lonely planet is good for. It has lots of info about basic histories of everything so you don't have to hire or pay for a tour guide. The sites are expensive because they expect tourists to visit. Some of the sites here in Prague are like $20. So pick what you want to see ahead of time and budget for that. It would suck to miss out on something you really wanted to see.Set your budget for everything you want to do before you. Know that if you travel with someone who has the ability to throw money around that there will be problems or you will throw around more money than you would like to. In general, try to make sure that you and your friends are on the same page when it comes to budgeting. Otherwise you guys will have different goals in mind.Other things to take into consideration.... Find out how much a metro pass costs and calculate to see if that is a better deal. Souvenirs - don't buy them in heavy tourist spots - wait - you can find some cool cheap stuff at the grocery store. Money spent at the airports will kill you - you can't bring drinks with you and you will probably purchase some in the airport. It is expensive. Trains are more expensive than buses.Look into Euro ------ (I can't remember the name of it. My cousin drives there buses.) They cover the whole continent. While it isn't as romantic as a train it is probably the best way to go. There are two companies that are in competition with my cousin's company. They are only three years old. You will have to do some research, because they don't have a name for themselves. It may be worth it because their prices are cheaper.I hope that scatter of information is a help to you.
