Question : I've always wanted to go to Amsterdam...any travel ideas?
Hi everyone!I've always wanted to travel to Amsterdam. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can stay, stuff to see, etc...on a budget? Also, I am single, so I need places that would be safe for a traveller on her own. Thanks! Also, I'm travelling from Canada...so any info about leaving from Canada would be grand!

I know that there is one main reason why people go to Amsterdam. But you must check out the art museum's like the Van Goug, a canal ride, and Vondle Park. The food and drink is pretty cheap. You can check discount travel sites like Sherman's for 5-8 day trips with air and hotel for $500-$1000 from NYC, or LA. If you go with a hostel, book in advance and get a private locked room if you are traveling alone. I personally was not impressed by Amsterdam and think the Bruges in Belgium, just 40km away is a much better and safer bet.

Hello, I have been there many times and Amsterdam is very expensive, even more so than Paris. You will want to go before mid may if you want to go this spring or after mid september for best prices on accomadations. If on a tight budget you will want to stay at Hostels, but research them before you go, some people don't like staying in rooms with strangers and sharing bathrooms. There is a tourist center at the Centraal Station (train station), they can look up rooms for you, look for the V V V sign. You can cheaply take a train from Schipol Airport to Centraal Station, from there most of what you will want to see will be in walking distance for most people. The main areas tourists go to are the red light district (can be dangerous at night), the museum district and the nearby Leidseplein area with all the nightclubs, also good shopping is nearby, coffeeshops are scattered about the city. Must sees for me are the Heineken Museum, Van Goh museum, and the red light district, april is tulip time. I hope this helps, it's all I have time for at the moment, feel free to email me with any specific questions, happy travels, Kevin

i only got the chance to visit Amsterdam for 1 day, but i think i have the most of it. i didn't go to any museum, save from the sex museum near the main station. there are many museums in amsterdam, so you better check travel books. i recomend Fyodor, since they give hints on budget as well, despite the lack of pictures, compared to Lonely Planet.if you have no interest in museum, you can just stroll around the canals and absorb of what Amsterdam is like.Happy traveling.
