I estimate that it should take about 2 hours, but if you hit traffic, that would definitely prolong the drive. I am not too familiar with driving from the center of LA, but when I drive from east LA (like 45 minutes east of LA) and go down to SD, it takes me about 1.75 hours w/out traffic.See the link below for the directions mapped from LAX to the San Diego Zoo.

LOL, these answers assume you have the Interstate all to yourself, which only happens on Tuesday. I would say from North L.A. plan on a good 3 hours.
