I've only been to the Caribbean on a cruise, and YES you definitely need a passport.Normally it takes a few months for a passport to be issued. You can rush this online, but it is very expensive.

Two forms of ID will work to show residency in the US (like birth certificate and drivers license) Went to Jamaica right after 911 and that got us in and out of the country!

Yes, thanks to this stupid war on terror... you need a Passport to re-enter the US from anywhere but Mexico and Canada and that changes at the end of the year.

For 2006, a driver's license and birth certificate are sufficient. On January 1, 2007, you will need a passport for the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada. On January 1, 2008, you will need a passport for travel to Europe and virtually anywhere in the world.
