I know in a few years you will have to have a passport to travel by land to mexico, i would assume its the same for canada. its all on the homeland security website though.

I recommend looking at this website:
http://www.gonorthwest.com/Visitor/planning/border/border.htmit's easy to read and outlines what documents you need travelling in either direction and what you can cross the border with. I'll tell you from personal experience if you have any doubts ask questions as you enter. I once went to Canada for just a few hours, taking just my u.s drivers license. I entered Canada easily but was held up returning to the u.s. They want to see an id and birth certificate (if you dont have your passport).

We went to Canada last year and had to have a picture id and a certified birth certificate. We were asked to show them at the border going into Canada but not when we crossed back into the USA.

Current Requirements for Entry Into CanadaVisas are not required for U.S. citizens entering Canada from the U.S. You will, however, need: 1. Proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license, voter’s registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship. 2. Photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license. All U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport.
