Do you need a passport to travel to Mexico? It looks like you will by the end of 2006, but not now.

Answer #4 No. Passports are not currently neccessary for US citizens crossing the Canadian and Mexican borders; that requirement is being phased in through 2007. You don't need a passport to visit Mexico by air until January 1, 2007. If traveling by land, you don't need a passport to visit Mexico until January 1, 2008. Even then, it may be a PASS, or People Access Security Service Card, around $50, rather than a passport. - answered by suzeeq
Answer #5 Suzeeg got it right. The answer is currently "No" for U.S. Citizens. You will need a birth certificate or Driver license etc.... for now - answered by Command003
