Travel Guide: Monterey
- California
- United States
Sea Otter Mom and Pup Floating Near Coast Guard Pier, Monterey, CA photo by: runningwave Highways 1 and 101 nearly converge in Monterey County. Here, rugged California headlands shelter numerous campsites in Pfeiffer Big Sur, Julia Pfeiffer Burns, and Andrew Molera state parks at world-famous Big Sur. The jagged shoreline of Point Lobos State Reserve, an underwater ocean preserve, is home to a variety of sea mammals. For more civilized pursuits, the quaint community of Carmel-by-the-Sea offers inviting shops and restaurants and the 1770 mission, San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo. Cruise 17-Mile Drive, a loop along the coast from Carmel through Pebble Beach to Pacific Grove. Continue up the peninsula to Monterey. Visit the Maritime Museum; the Custom House, the state's oldest government building; and Fisherman's Wharf, where you can stroll among fish stalls, shops, and restaurants. Drive Lighthouse Road to Cannery Row. Here, old cannery buildings house shops, galleries, and restaurants. John Steinbeck's novel Cannery Row was set here when the bay flowed with "silver rivers of fish." Today, the fish are at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, home to more than 6,500 marine animals. The aquarium's Outer Bay exhibit, a million-gallon indoor sea behind a vast window, opens this year. Monterey Bay is a national marine sanctuary. Destinations in Monterey |

Question: #2: Santa Rosa CA to Monterey using Pacific Coast Highway?
I'm traveling to Monterey Bay, and I'd really like to take PCH for the scenic value but am not sure where to get on it from Santa Rosa CA. I'd prefer not to have to go into S.F. if at all possible... Can ANYONE help?!?!?!?!So since several people have complained about my use of the term PCH, I'm sorry, but yes, I did live in So Cal before, and what does it matter what it's called anyway, as long as you know what I'm talking about? A rose called by any other name smells just as sweet; a highway by any other name is still the same.

Question: #8: Top 5....US cities to visit?
I love to travel and have been to most of the major cities in America. Here are my top five!!5. Miami / South Beach - just got back, had a mojito, Cuban, and beautiful women all around me...life was good4. Austin, TX - By far the best college town in America, best of TX year after year...the live music seen can't be beat.3. Vegas - for fun cann not be beat, but get a little old on day four, but still is the most fun you can have anywhere on earth!!2. San Fran - So much better than any city on the west coast. has a little of everything with Napa to the north and Monterey to the south...So much culture in one city too, the cheapest dates I had in my life, you can take a chick walking and she'll love it!!1. NYC, so cliche, but still #1 in my book. To much to do, one entire summer and you still would only scrath the surface!!* honorable mention - Boston - very sim to SF, but with les diversity!!

Question: #9: If you wanted to buy a car alarm and have it installed, who's the best and what kind?
I'm in Monterey, CA, and need a good alarm that isn't complicated to use, or seems to go off for no reason. I've had my RAV4 broken into twice while traveling and staying in motel parking lots, and am tired of having the windows replaced. Don't know why they are doing it. There is no fancy radio or other "good stuff" they can see by looking in. Where are the best deals on a good product and installation in this area? What should I expect to pay? Anybody out there who knows about local sources? Thanks
