Travel Guide: Heidelberg - Germany - Europe

Heidelberg (pop. 132 000) on Neckar river is set among lovely hills, where the Neckar valley opens into the Rhine valley. Its famous 600-year-old University of Heidelberg (the oldest in Germany, founded in 1386) has several Renaissance towers and turrets at the base of a hill near Heidelberg Castle. Be warned: It is a draw for fleets of tour buses in the summer.

The best way to enjoy the town is to stroll along the Hauptstraße in the old section to mingle with the local crowds and to sit at one of the many street cafes or beer halls. (If you have a car leave it at a parking garage on the outskirts or you will go crazy trying to find your way through the maze of small one-way streets.) Also visit the Heidelberg Castle which changes colors with the different angles of the sun (take the cable car near Kornmarkt to get to the castle). View the city from the Karl-Theodor Bridge which citizens of Heidelberg just call "Alte Brucke" (Old Bridge). The nearby Philosophenweg gives a great overlook of the city, it is definetly worth walking up this steep path. For Roman artifacts and more tour the Kurpfalzisches Museum. Day trips can also be made to the castle and vineyards of the Neckar Valley.

Travel Q&A on Heidelberg:

Question: #1: Traveling to Heidelberg Germany for Spring Break. Recommendations on what I must see and do.?
My nephew (13) and I will be in Heidelberg for 5 days during spring break (2nd week of March). I would love some input from those in the community who have been and/or are familiar with the area. Question: #3: Searching for Mr. Right? Why not try ME?
I live in Heidelberg, the world-famous "City of Romance," and while I don't have time for long romances, I do know how to treat a lady -- provided there is sufficient return on investment. I am available for a DATE if you are a leggy, open-minded, and open-toed babe, but you have to come to me. No travel vouchers provided, but it will be worth it if you aren't a "hassliche Entlein!"We can dine in the unforgettable gourmet castle restaurant "Schoenmehl's," then view the Neckar River below on the castle balcony as I nuzzle close, pick the last of the "Heidelberg Duck" from my teeth, and barf softly but firmly into your ear, "Ah komm, KÜSS MICH!" (Kiss me!)From there, we can walk hand-in-hand across the Old Bridge as I clasp your buns and growl, "Ich WILL dich!" (I want you!)From that point forward, it will truly be the paradise night of your life. Your tummy won't be the only thing that will be full by dawn, and you will thank yourself for the best decision you ever made. - asked by The Boot
